A history of game controllers…

by Jonic Linley on February 3rd, 2006

Revolution Advanced has a great article on the evolution of that most ubiquitous of gaming gadgets, the cimple controller.

From the now iconic, blocky joystick of the Atari 2600, right the way through the introduction of d-pads, analogue sticks, shoulder buttons and rumble features, finally, and somewhat predictably, ending up on the forthcoming Revolution controller.

The number of controllers we’ve held (and sometimes thrown at walls) is such that we often take for granted just how important a controller is. They can make or break a system (remember the original Xbox pad?), so it’s great to see that they’re getting more attention these days. Indeed, the unveiling of the Revolution’s controller was one of 2005’s gaming landmarks, which will forever be remembered.

My favorite out of the controllers on display is without doubt the Gamecube pad, although I’d have liked them to feature the Saturn pad that was designed for NiGHTS. What’s your favorite?
